Elisabethenstrasse to become temporary one-way street due to redesign

Cars, bicycles and trams are to be diverted for seven weeks as part of the second phase of the redesign of Elisabethenstrasse. From Monday, the street will only be open between Bankverein and Henric Petri-Strasse in the direction of Wettsteinbrücke. This phase will last until the end of September.

The diversion has been put in place while the pavement, tram tracks, street and underground pipes are renewed by the civil construction authority, BVB, and IWB. As well as the maintenance of urban infrastructure, a pathway for pedestrians between SBB train station and the city centre will be created.

Police looking for witnesses after accident in Laufen

The police are looking for witnesses after a cyclist suffered injuries in an accident in Laufen on Thurday afternoon.

The accident happened shortly before 4pm as the 50-year-old man cycled along Bahnhofstrasse in the underpass towards Wahlen.

While he was riding through the underpass, the cyclist said a car in the opposite direction crossed the carriageway and drove towards him. He fell from his bike as he tried to avoid a collision. The driver of the vehicle then drove off towards the city centre, leaving the cyclist with injuries. He had to be taken to a hospital by an ambulance.

The circumstances around the accident are not yet clear. The Baselland police are therefore asking witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the control room in Liestal on telephone number: 061 553 35 35.

Lorry loses four-ton excavator shovel in Weil am Rhein

A two-hour road closure was caused after a four-ton excavator shovel slid from a lorry and fell onto the A5 motorway.

The accident happened as the lorry, carrying the shovel on a trailer, left the A5 motorway at the Weil am Rhein/Friedlingen exit. Just before turning onto the B532 road, the shovel slid from the loading platform onto the road. It had apparently not been securely fastened.

There were no other cars nearby on the otherwise busy motorway entry/exit. The impact of the shovel caused damage to the road surface, which will have to undergo repairs.

One lane in the direction of the B532 had to be closed for two hours, while the entire road had to be closed for an extra 30 minutes. This resulted in traffic obstructions and long queues. The police had to regulate the traffic.
