Rubber bullets fired outside stadium after FC Basel match against FC Sion

The "quick and courageous" intervention of police and security guards prevented a run onto the pitch by visiting fans at St. Jakob Park stadium on Saturday night. Trouble broke out both inside and outside the stadium after three masked FC Basel supporters stole a flag off rival fans and ran across the pitch to their stand, the Muttenzerkurve. They then set fire to the flag, which caused uproar among the away-team supporters. The cantonal police had to step in and provide back-up to stadium security staff when a majority of the supporters of the away-team tried to run onto the pitch. The police officers linked arms to make a chain, which calmed the situation down. After the match, a group of FC Sion fans gathered around the waiting buses at Gellertstrasse and began to throw objects at the police. The police officers responded by firing rubber bullets in order to gain control over the situation.

Severely injured man found in Weil am Rhein near the Swiss border

The police are looking for witnesses after a man with severe head injuries was found in Weil am Rhein near the border with Basel. The man had been found at Nonnenholzstrasse, between the border crossing of Otterbach and the Laguna, at around 7.30pm on Saturday night. The Bässlergut Federal asylum and expulsion centre are just a stone's throw away on Swiss territory. The Tunisian citizen, who lives at the asylum centre, had to be brought to the cantonal hospital in Basel for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. During questioning, there was no information given about a crime or crime scene, the police said on Sunday. The police say the place where the man was found is not the location of the crime.

Alpine horn concert on Marktplatz

The Alpine Horn Association of North-West Switzerland had its 62nd general assembly on Sunday at the Theater Tabourettli at Spalenberg in Basel. The highlight was a choir concert on the Marktplatz which was accompanied by flag swingers. The concert was a taster of what is to come at the Federal Yodelling Festival in Basel, which will take place in Basel from 25th to 28th June, 2020. The event was organised by the association's long-term president, Thomas P von Arx. The Alpine Horn Association of North-West Switzerland is a collective of more than 300 Alpine hornists from the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Baselland, Argovia, and Solothurn. Some members also come from Germany and France. The Alpine Horn and Büchel – another trombone-like alpine instrument – is a branch of the Yodelling Association of North-West Switzerland whose activities also include flag swinging and yodelling. The general assembly of the association took place for a special reason in Basel. Mr P von Arx from Basel has resigned and handed over the leadership to new hands. As part of his resignation, he has organised for his last general assembly to take place in his hometown. Mr P von Arx said he was looking forward to the "splendid choir concert".

Speaking about the assembly yesterday, he said: "What a unique experience it was to see and listen to around 50 alpine hornists and other wind players in different traditional costumes."
