Mittlere Brücke closed for all traffic as of Monday due to summer road works

Construction sites are in full bloom everywhere in Basel. Starting this Monday, the Mittlere Brücke – and thus most of the inner city – will be closed for all traffic. And as if this wasn’t enough already, there will be further blockages and delays across Basel from Schänzli to Riehen. Barfi.ch offers a map overview of all obstructions.

Public traffic distress starts on Monday

End of the line for tram traffic in central Basel. The Mittlere Brücke will be closed as of this Monday, 19th June for all public traffic, and is to remain blocked until 13th August. This closure concerns nearly all lines that run through the inner city – except for the tram lines 10, 11, and 16, whose normal route does not lead across Mittlere Brücke. Afterwards, the inner city is open for traffic again, yet only for a short time until the tram tracks will be replaced in September. The Basel Transport Services (BVB) still have not presented the traffic regulations for that time.

Things are happening in Riehen as well: The traffic axis from Beyeler Foundation to Riehen Grenze will also be closed as of Monday. These road works are going to last until the end of the year, and replacement buses will be in service. Furthermore, tram routes will be renewed in Kleinhüningen between Wiesenplatz and Weil am Rhein until the end of July.

Car drivers should avoid Schänzli and especially Riehen

Not only public traffic is affected. As part of the sustainability project Schänzli, renovation works have been going on since April 2017 in the area A2/A18 motorway entry Muttenz Süd towards Basel and smaller road works on the main axis of the A2, the federal roads office stated. Since May 2017, there are also on-going necessary renovation works at the motorway entrance A2/A18 Muttenz Nord/St. Jakob towards Delémont. There will be various night closures.

Riehen remains a nuisance both for public traffic and for car drivers. The Äussere Baselstrasse is still in the process of renovation, and the rerouting through the residential districts will therefore not change in the coming weeks. In addition, Riehen’s Baselstrasse between Bettingerstrasse and Schmiedgasse will undergo renovations and a redesign from 25th June to 12th August, the canton informed. Pipes will be laid until 20th July, and the Baselstrasse will then be closed for all traffic from 23rd July to 12th August for tram tracks replacement and road works. The main reasons for this general renovation are the tram lanes, which are in dire need of being renovated. Basel’s construction and traffic office stated that without a total closure during the last three weeks of road works, the time needed for all renovations would extend to more than six months.
