Two shipping containers completely destroyed by fire at Birsfelden harbour

Two shipping containers laden with wood were completely destroyed in a fire at Birsfelden harbour in the early hours of Friday morning. Nobody was injured.

According to a press statement issued on Friday, an emergency call was made to the police central contact centre in Liestal at 4.38am. By the time the police and fire brigade arrived on the scene, the two containers were fully ablaze.

The fire brigade was quickly able to get the fire under control and could prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby coal yard. The shipping containers were completely destroyed in the fire, which has caused significant damage to property.

The reason for the fire is unknown and is part of an ongoing investigation.

Grenade shell from Second World War found in Lörrach

Residents in Lörrach sparked a major incident when they discovered what they believed was a bomb on Thursday.

Locals discovered the live device in the early evening and immediately contacted the police, a spokesperson for the police headquarters in Freiburg said.

The Lörrach police and the bomb disposal unit from Stuttgart immediately rushed to the scene in Haagen, not far from the Swiss border.

When they arrived, however, they discovered that instead of a bomb, it was an unexploded grenade from the Second World War. The Stuttgart specialists were able to make the device safe.
